DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid hormone, produced primarily in the adrenal glands, as well as in other parts of the body, including the testicles, ovaries, and brain. After production, the bloodstream carries DHEA to tissues and cells. The body converts DHEA to male and female sex hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone.
DHEA levels typically peak by the time people are in their 20s and decline with age. The marked decline in serum DHEA with age plays a significant role in age-related changes in tissues influenced by sex hormones. DHEA replacement in elderly women and men who have very low serum DHEAS levels can partially reverse age-related changes in fat mass, fat-free mass, and BMD.(Effects of DHEA replacement on bone mineral density and body composition in elderly women and men.Clin Endocrinol (Oxf). 2000 Nov;53(5):561-8.) †
